Artist Profile

Gerald Reitlinger was best known as a distinguishes author of many books and articles on contemporary History, the History of taste and the Archeology of Iraq. He was a frequent contributor to The Daily Telegraph, The Observer, Connoiseur, Financial Times, New York Times etc., His important collection of European, Islamic, Chinese and Japanese ceramics was bequethed to The Ashmolean Museum in 1978.

Reitlinger was however also a professional artist who trained at The Slade School and at The Westminster School of Art. He was a frequent exhibitor at The New English Art Club, The London Group and The Society of British Artist.

He belonged to the school of “English Impressionists” who developed through The New English Art Club in the 1920`s and there are in his paintings frequent echoes of the work of his colleagues Sickert, Lucien Pissaro, Spencer Gore and their friends.
